The Project

An art intervention at the Cyprus Library, including a video and sound projection and an unconventional piece of performance art, aims at challenging traditional notion of space and locality and at re-inventing the library, traditionally considered as an old, quite and dusty place. The event is about bridging the gap between a particular place, its people and their everydayness. The Library will open its doors for one day on a Sunday afternoon to become an alternative setting without loosing the essence of its character; it is and will always be a place of knowledge.

Μια εικαστική παρέμβαση στην Κυπριακή Βιβλιοθήκη που συμπεριλαμβάνει μια βίντεο και ηχο-προβολή και ένα αντισυμβατικό κομμάτι performance art, και η οποία αποσκοπεί στην αμφισβήτηση των παραδοσιακών εννοιών του χώρου και την επανεφεύρεση της βιβλιοθήκης, που παραδοσιακά θεωρείται ως ένας παλιός, ήσυχος και σκονισμένος χώρος. Η εκδήλωση είναι μια απόπειρα για τη γεφύρωση του χάσματος ανάμεσα σε μια συγκεκριμένη τοποθεσία, τους ανθρώπους της, και την καθημερινότητα τους. Η Βιβλιοθήκη θα ανοίξει τις πόρτες της για μια μόνο μέρα, ένα Κυριακάτικο απόγευμα, για να γίνει ένας εναλλακτικός χώρος χωρίς όμως να χάνει την ουσία του χαρακτήρα της: είναι και θα είναι πάντα ένα μέρος γνώσης.

The Cyprus Library's actual origin dates back to 1927 with the establishment of the Cyprus Public Library on the initiative of the British Colonial Governor Sir Ronald Storrs. It operated under municipal control until 1954. Under the Cyprus Public Library Law of 1968 the Library came under the control of the Ministry of Education and Culture and its collections were merged with those of the Ministry's Library. In 1974 the Library was relocated back to its original premises on the D'Avila Bastion of the Venetian walls of Nicosia. The Cyprus Library was established by law in 1987.
